The Story of the Cap
Shortly after my 9/11, my Sniper Team was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan for Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. I was home looking through our family photos and came across several taken at Liberty Park near the Statue of Liberty. In several, I noticed the World Trade Center in the background. I thought of all the people killed that tragic day. How the whole world was shocked and how my new-born daughter would never see them.
I was honored to be in a unit on the spear-point; ready to get the world some payback. Trimming the photo to fit inside the scope on the Sniper rifle, I would not forget the people for which I protect. I have now carried that photo of World Trade Center for five tours. It kept me warm on the mountains of Afghanistan, it has kept me determined in Iraq.
Many have asked me about the picture in my scope cap. To me, it’s not just a novelty, but a tribute. Too many Americans have forgotten the towers, the bodies, the families. The picture is a reminder to remember.
